There’s a number I want you to sit with.
100 billion tons.
That’s how much material humanity pulls from the earth every single year. Rock. Metal. Fossil fuel. Sand. Timber. Every year. Without pause. Without a real plan for what comes next.
I’ve spent over 30 years in the building and interiors industry. I’ve seen what goes into homes. What goes under floors, behind walls, into the products people live with every day. And I’ll tell you straight. Most of it shouldn’t exist in the form it does. Most of it is a shortcut dressed up as progress.
This isn’t a lecture. It’s an observation. From someone who has been paying attention for a long time.
The Numbers Are Already Uncomfortable
Construction alone accounts for 40 to 50 percent of all material consumption on earth. Nearly half of 100 billion tons. Just to build and maintain the places we live and work. Steel, cement, sand, gravel. Extracted, processed, shipped, installed, and eventually demolished.
Cement production is one of the largest contributors to CO2 emissions on the planet. Steel isn’t far behind. And most of what gets built isn’t designed to last. It’s designed to be affordable. It’s designed to sell.
Only 7 to 9 percent of materials used globally are actually recycled. Less than one in ten. The rest becomes waste, landfill, or pollution. We extract more, use it once, throw most of it away, then extract more again.
That’s not a supply chain. That’s a conveyor belt pointed off a cliff.
What We Call Progress
I understand how we got here. After the Second World War, manufacturing accelerated. Plastic arrived. Synthetic resins. Laminate composites. They were cheap. They were scalable. They solved real problems at the time. Nobody in a factory in 1965 was thinking about where all of it would end up in 2025.
But we’re in 2025. We don’t have the excuse of not knowing.
The building industry has leaned hard into materials that look like nature without being nature. Vinyl that mimics wood. Laminate pressed to look like stone. Synthetic floors finished with chemicals that off-gas into the air inside your home. The stuff is everywhere. Because it’s cheap to produce and easy to move in volume.
The people buying it aren’t bad people. They’re working within the options they’ve been given. The problem isn’t the consumer. The problem is a system that made the damaging option the default, then called it innovation.
The Resources Themselves
Let me be specific. Vague concern doesn’t move anything.
Iron ore. Copper. Aluminium. Sand. These are finite. Not in a philosophical sense. Finite in the sense that high-quality reserves are depleting, extraction costs are rising, and the environmental damage compounds year on year. Deforestation. Water contamination. Habitat destruction. All of it sitting behind materials most of us have never thought to question.
Phosphate is one that rarely gets talked about. It’s essential for fertiliser. It keeps global food production running. And it’s being mined from a handful of countries with almost no recycling infrastructure behind it. When it runs low, it isn’t flooring that suffers. It isn’t buildings. It’s food.
These aren’t distant problems. They’re already in motion.
What Regeneration Actually Means
The word sustainable has been worn to nothing by marketing departments. So let me be clear about what real regeneration looks like.
It’s not a green label on the same old process. It’s materials that actually renew. Systems designed for disassembly and reuse. Products built from things the earth can replace.
Cork is something I know well. The bark is harvested from living trees every nine years. The tree stays standing. The bark grows back. A harvested cork oak absorbs more carbon after harvest. Between three and five times more. The cork forests of Portugal alone absorb around 4.8 million tons of CO2 every year.
That’s one material. One example of what becomes possible when the thinking starts in the right place.
Hempcrete. Geopolymer cement. Recycled steel. Reclaimed timber. These aren’t fringe ideas anymore. They work. They perform. They just require a willingness to think differently about what we build with and why.
The Part That Gets Me
I’ve walked into a lot of homes. Expensive homes. Modest homes. Renovations and new builds. And almost everywhere, the materials tell the same story. Speed. Cost. Volume. The cheapest way to cover the most surface area in the least amount of time.
Nobody chose those floors because they wanted to cause damage. They chose them because that’s what was available. That’s what the builder quoted. That’s what the showroom had on display.
That’s what bothers me. The damage isn’t malicious. It’s structural. It’s built into the way the industry presents choices. And because most people never see the extraction, the processing, the waste, they have no reason to connect what’s on their floor to what’s happening to the ground somewhere else in the world.
Out of sight. Out of mind. Business as usual.
Where This Goes
The most powerful thing in any industry is demand. When enough people start asking what something is made of, where it came from, what happens to it at the end of its life, things change. Slowly. Reluctantly. But they change. Because that’s the only language a supply chain understands.
The regenerative options already exist. The knowledge is there. The materials are there. What’s lagging is the collective decision to choose differently. At scale. Consistently. Without waiting for someone else to go first.
Think different about what you build your life on.
100 billion tons a year.
That number doesn’t have to keep climbing. But it will, until enough people decide it shouldn’t.
